The next meeting of Taking a Faithful Stand for Equity will be Tuesday, June 13, at 6:30 pm on Zoom. If you haven’t already, registered, please email Lori Hawkins at lhawkins@cushkenosha.com and ask for access to the zoom registration.
Our topic will be current proposals for reforming shared revenue — funding that flows from the state to local governments. It is a complicated issue but one that we all need to understand, because these proposals would have an enormous impact on our communities and our efforts to advance racial equity.
We will be joined by Philip Rocco, Associate Professor of Political Science at Marquette University, and Dr. Cassandra Bowers, Executive Director of All In Wisconsin.
Prof. Rocco has written extensively on the shared revenue proposals from both Governor Evers and Republican legislators for The Recombobulation Area. You can read his analysis at: What we talk about when we talk about shared revenue (which has links to his earlier columns on the version of the shared revenue bill passed by the Assembly and comparing Gov. Evers’ and the GOP proposals).
Dr. Bowers will share All In Wisconsin’s messaging and narrative around how the GOP proposal would hurt and scapegoat Milwaukee, especially Black and Brown residents, and that it isn’t a plan to increase the services and resources our families need but yet another backdoor ploy to fund police departments and take away local control. (See the attached messaging guide).
Whatever the status of the legislation is at the time we meet, we’ll have suggestions for actions you can take.
Please join us!
